Minutes of the November 3rd, 2002 Meeting of the Maine Nordic Ski Club

Held at the home of Karl and Sue Foster-Johnson

President Peter Brickley brought the meeting to order at 2:38 pm. He commented that this year was the best Long Falls Dam Road Roller Ski and picnic lunch ever. The roller ski event venue was changed to a nicely groomed 1 km loop up by Bullwinkles on Sugarloaf Mountain. Temperatures were in the mid-20s, no wind, and views to snow covered Katahdin complemented a beautiful morning of skiing.

Members Present: Peter Brickley, Chris Dorion, Annette Brickley, Jeff Foltz, Sue Foster, Karl Johnson, Dan Works, Alice Goodwin, Jane Barron, Charlie Cary, Bob Hamel.

1. Previous meeting minutes were approved; they have been posted on the club web site since April.

2. Chris Dorion gave the Treasureršs Report: Balance on hand is $742.98 and we expect approximately $500 in membership renewals this fall. $400 was disbursed for club events over the summer.

3. Dan Works gave a Membership Report:

Our list of members is not distributed to third parties, despite several requests from organizations. AXCS has requested our membership list but we have turned them down.

10 to 20% of our membership fluctuates yearly. Possibly some members are simply forgetting to renew memberships. Discussion of how to solve this challenge; the Club will send out SASE for members to renew.

4. Summer and Fall events wrap-up and discussion: There was a consensus that the events were well attended and interesting. Newsletter stories will appear in the fall newsletter for more detail. September events are low to no turnout; September is a busy month for many members.

5. Winter Events:

Chris Dorion is organizing a trip to Labrador City the very end of March, probably depart central Maine on Wednesday, March 26th, race the 56 km skate loppet on the 29th, return on Sunday, March 30th. He may rent a van, depending on numbers.

The Club will again host a cocktail party at the NENSA Masters Championships, to be held in Waitesfield, Vermont January 18-19th. It was approved to spend $100 for this function.

Sue Foster reported on events at the Sugarloaf Touring Center: December 15th is the High School Opener, and Sunday the 16th is a 10 km skate men, 5 km skate women open race. On January 4th is a 20 km skate, the "Sugarloaf Scramble", also an open race.

6. Spring Meeting: The date was discussed, and it will be the weekend of April 6-7th. The big event will be a "Nordic Jackass Triathlon", featuring skiing, snowshoeing, and as-yet-unplanned events. Chris Dorion and Peter Brickley to organize this event.

7. A uniform order was discussed. There was support for a new design. Matching warmup pants were also discussed. It was agreed that a committee would be formed, consisting of Mary Lou Lowry, Jeff Foltz, Karl Johnson, Chris Dorion, and Peter Brickley. Members present voiced support for a Club T-shirt, available this winter. Jeff Foltz will contact Mary Lou Lowry to see if she is willing to design the shirt.

8. President Brickley announced he will step down in April.

9. A special thanks was voiced by the members for Karl and Sue Foster-Johnson for hosting the meeting, providing lunch, and the excellent grooming.
