The Maine Nordic Ski Club

Winter 2000/2001 Hill Challenge!

Course:

The course begins at the warming hut on trail 5. From the warming hut ascend on trail 5 until you reach the left-hand branch to trail 27 (Skook). Trail 27 winds through the trees for several km, crosses trail 31, and continues upwards. Above this crossing, trail 27 includes a series of steep up-hills and downhills, including the infamous "headwall". Go up the headwall and continue your ascent. Reaching the high point of trail 27 you will bear right on trail 50 and immediately begin a rapid (and welcome) descent. This steep trail falls continuously downhill for nearly 2 km, merges with trail 5 and returns to the warming hut. Stop skiing, check your time and enjoy the view of the Bigelow range while you rest.

See the attached course map.

Rules:

There are no age handicaps or time allowances for snow or trail conditions. You can use any technique you like, and ski the course in any groomed condition (providing it is open). All results should be self-timed to the nearest second. A log sheet will be provided at the main desk of the Sugarloaf Outdoor Center for you to enter your name, the date, your time, and any notes you’d like to add. The challenge winner will be announced with great fanfare and merriment at the annual spring MNSC bash and meeting (currently scheduled for early April, TBA).
